With a hint of mystery and intrigue, Miquella’s story resembles a tragic fairy tale. Brought up with his sister Malenia, he was cursed to live forever in a child’s body and devoted years to researching a remedy under the Golden Order’s guidance. Nevertheless, they were unable to locate a cure. Miquella became so frustrated that she left the Order and tried to create the Haligtree in an effort to subvert the Erdtree’s power.
He was abducted by his half-brother Mohg, alias the Lord of Blood, though, before he could fulfill his dreams. Miquella was to be awakened to godhood and become Mohg’s consort. However, the player—who was now the Tarnished—ran in and stopped Mohg’s plans, forcing Miquella to leave. Now that Miquella has somehow traveled to the Land of Shadow in Shadow of the Erdtree, it is up to the player to discover the mysteries of this new place. The players discover signs of a major conflict that left the Land of Shadow scarred, commanded by a figure dubbed Messmer, whose flaming presence left a permanent impact on the terrain, while Miquella follows in his mother Marika’s footsteps—a woman who had also visited the region in the past.
When the player assumes the position of Miquella’s “Promised Lord,” the narrative assumes layers of destiny and prophesy, and the player witnesses the mysteries of the Land of Shadow and its denizens come to light. It’s a story of power struggles, self-discovery, and redemption.
